SportsAid

SportsAid is celebrating 40 years of helping the next generation of British Olympians and Paralympians in 2016. Since 1976, SportsAid has provided young talented athletes with financial support and greater recognition during the critical early stages of their careers. The athletes typically supported by the charity are aged 12 to 18 and among the country’s brightest prospects for sporting success.

Over the last four decades, SportsAid has supported British sporting household names including Jessica Ennis-Hill, Steve Redgrave, Mo Farah, Greg Rutherford, Tom Daley, Sarah Storey, Tanni Grey-Thompson, Amir Khan, Luol Deng, Paula Radcliffe, Ellie Simmonds, Chris Hoy, Bradley Wiggins, Luke Donald, Katherine Grainger, Ade Adepitan, Rebecca Adlington, Dina Asher-Smith, Laura Trott and Max Whitlock.

SportsAid has a strong track record of supporting the right athletes at the right time. Almost two-thirds of Team GB at the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games were former recipients of SportsAid's support, winning 20 of Team GB's 29 gold medals and 27 of ParalympicsGB's 34 gold medals. More than 450 of the athletes competing at the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games were previously supported by SportsAid, with 241 of them winning medals.

Her Royal Highness The Duchess of Cambridge is SportsAid’s Patron. Her support for young and aspiring athletes stems from her love of sport and a desire to help young people realise their full potential. She has spent time with many athletes who have been supported by SportsAid at the charity's training days and workshops. She is helping the charity to take its message further than was ever possible before.

SSE and SportsAid

SSE’s partnership with SportsAid began in 2013 to create a lasting legacy from the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games. With SportsAid, SSE created the SSE Next Generation programme to help young disabled and non-disabled athletes across the UK who have been highlighted by their sports as being in need of financial support. All of these athletes have the potential to compete at a future Commonwealth, Olympic or Paralympic Games. From a wide range of communities, sports and backgrounds, these inspirational young people are being supported by SSE through to 2017.

One hundred athletes a year

After initially supporting 12 SportsAid athletes in the summer of 2013, by 2014 the SSE Next Generation programme had already grown to support 50 of the nation’s brightest prospects. The following year, building on the success of Glasgow 2014, SSE doubled that number to 100 athletes in response to a successful social media campaign, which asked people from all four home nations to tweet their support for their team in the build up to the Games using #GoScotland, #GoEngland, #GoWales or #GoNI. The nation with the most tweets, Scotland, got the largest share of the additional athletes joining the programme in 2015 followed by Wales, England and then Northern Ireland.  SSE are continuing their support of 100 young multi-sport athletes throughout 2016 across the UK and Ireland.

A lasting legacy for sport

As one of the UK’s leading energy companies and a major sponsor of British and Irish sport, SSE offers every athlete on the SSE Next Generation programme a superb package of support – including vital funding, expert mentoring and additional skills such as media training – in a bid to help them fulfil their full sporting potential and create a lasting, living legacy for sport. This legacy investment also includes the benefit of having exceptional former athletes on board like Olympic silver medallist Leon Taylor who, as an official SSE ambassador for the programme, works directly with the athletes as a mentor.

Bright prospects

SportsAid’s chief executive Tim Lawler said: “The SportsAid athletes SSE is helping are bright prospects but they face huge financial challenges. The Next Generation programme is a fantastic opportunity that will benefit them enormously at a key time in their development. Committing to a four-year partnership with SportsAid shows that SSE understands the value of a genuine legacy for sport.”

Proud to be working with SportsAid

SSE’s director of sponsorship Wendy Barbour said: “We are very proud to be working with SportsAid and the Next Generation athletes to support emerging talent in every home nation to create a positive legacy for sport.”
